One of the most frequent questions we get asked as locals is “What kind of weather do you experience in your area?” Since Asheville is a four-season climate in which each season is distinct, it extends glorious annual displays that locals and tourists alike look forward to and accommodates year-round outdoor activities.
Visitors are often surprised to find that even the winter months can bring mild, comfortable days, followed by cooler nights. While the region does occasionally see snow accumulation, snow is not a regular occurrence by any means. Higher elevation areas will often see notably more accumulation than “Asheville proper.” However, those searching for snow are never too far from a small commute to ski slopes like Hatley Pointe (formerly Wolf Ridge), Beech Mountain, and Sugar Mountain.
When our region transitions to the spring season, typically late March through May, winter’s chill can still be felt in the early part of spring, especially during the evening and morning hours. During the day, springtime weather is warm and pleasant, and the flower blooms are positively magical, especially at the iconic Biltmore Estate.
Summer in Asheville, NCFor those all too familiar with summer temperatures that exceed 90 degrees, Asheville’s summer can act as a much-needed breath of fresh mountain air. Our region rarely gets above 90 degrees during the days and can maintain some comfortable low temperatures in the evening, as cool mountain breezes blow through. In terms of rainfall, late spring and summer tend to draw the most rain, but sunshine is typically still prevalent during this time of year.
Arguably the most popular time of year in the mountains is the highly sought-after autumn season, which offers one of the most beautiful color change periods on the globe, especially during October. In the autumn season, leaves change from lush green to brilliant red, yellow, and orange. This time of year is extremely popular on the Blue Ridge Parkway, where you will find cars driving along at a leisurely pace and hikers stopping off at one of the many trailheads with their eyes pointed skyward to catch a glimpse of the glorious fall color show.
