With an average class of 20, UNC Asheville was rated seventh in the country among the Public Liberal Arts Colleges in U.S. News & World Report's “Best Colleges in 2021. Other notable awards and accolades for the college include #11 Most Affordable Colleges in North Carolina, #16 Best Value Colleges in North Carolina, #8 Best Colleges in North Carolina, and more. Just under half of UNC Asheville’s students live on campus (46%). 


In 1927, UNC Asheville opened its doors as Buncombe County Junior College with the focus on supporting Western North Carolina residents in pursuing their educational goals. Over the years, the school has endured a few identity shifts and physical location changes before landing in its current spot in the North Asheville community in 1961. By 1969, the then Asheville-Biltmore College became part of the University of North Carolina system as an undergraduate liberal arts institution.

    UNC Asheville has 16 residence halls on campus, with 94% of first-year students living on site. For upperclassmen or those looking for housing surrounding the campus, the Northside at Merrimon apartments are within walking distance. The Montford Area Historic District and pocket neighborhoods such as Jackson Park and Five Points all adjoin the University campus. North Asheville, in general, remains a popular choice for those looking for permanent housing while working or attending the university. 


    For example, Lakeview Park and Beaver Lake are located 2 miles from the campus. Grove Park is even closer, at 1.5 miles. It’s also very easy to get around campus thanks to the Glenn Creek Greenway, which runs through the campus and connects to downtown Asheville. Commuters can walk, bike, or run from the Reed Creek Greenway to W.T. Weaver Blvd, which runs alongside the Glenn’s Creek Greenway and passes the Asheville Botanical Gardens before the campus entry points.

    Community Programs + Activities

    The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), designed for “life’s second half,” is operated out of UNCA’s Reuter Center and offers a wide range of arts and sciences courses to those in the community. There are over 400 volunteers who assist staff and help shape OLLI programming. Classes range from retirement planning to life transition programs to civic engagement programs, and much more.
