Montford Asheville Real Estate & Historic Homes for Sale
About
Montford
Nestled less than two miles outside of downtown Asheville, Montford is one of Asheville’s oldest neighborhoods, offering a glimpse into the city’s storied past. Designated a historic district in the late 1970s, these grand homes have retained their architectural integrity, cementing their lasting place in Asheville’s history and earning national recognition.
The neighborhood is home to North Carolina’s longest-running Shakespeare Theatre Company, the Montford Park Players, Highland Hospital (which gained notoriety for being Zelda Fitzgerald’s final home where she died in a tragic fire), Homewood Wedding & Event Venue, and historic Riverside Cemetery, a garden-style cemetery where several notable figures are buried—including Thomas Wolfe, O. Henry, Isaac Dickson, Richard Sharpe Smith, and George Masa.
With culture at your fingertips and the past at your heels, it’s clear why Montford is one of Asheville’s most coveted neighborhoods to call home!

Historic District &
Architecture
Characterized by late 19th and early 20th-century architecture, the beautiful Montford Historic District primarily features homes in the Queen Anne/Victorian, Colonial Revival, Neoclassical, and Arts and Crafts archectural styles. Apart from Biltmore Village, just outside the Biltmore Estate, the Montford neighborhood showcases the highest concentration of Richard Sharp Smith’s residential designs.
Some notable Smith-designed homes include 1900 Inn on Montford, Ottis Green House, Frederick Rutledge Cottage, and M.T. Brown Cottage. The supervising architect for the Biltmore Estate, Smith’s Biltmore-style elements can be seen in his signature pebble-dashed walls, steep roofs, and Tudor-style timber framing. Many of the homes within the neighborhood also exhibit elements like truncated gables, intricate woodwork, prominent wrap-around porches, brilliant stained glass, and storybook-like turrets—bolstering Montford’s timeless charm and enduring desirability.
Many of the grand historic homes have been restored and currently operate as bed and breakfasts and inns, offering the chance to see the interiors of these architectural gems up close. Montford also allows visitors to take a driving or walking tour to appreciate the stunning architecture. Find information on self-guided tours at the Asheville Visitor Center, or you book a guided tour with Asheville by Foot. The Tempie Avery Community Center also hosts an annual Holiday Tour of Homes (over 25 years old). This neighborhood is often decked out for every holiday, delighting both residents and tourists alike.
