About
Lake View Park

Centered around the man-made Beaver Lake, North Asheville’s Lake View Park is a historic, upscale residential neighborhood known for its nature-rich environment and opulent homes. Created in 1923 by notable landscape architect and urban planner John Nolen, Beaver Lake was previously a meadow called “Baird Bottom.”

Beaver Lake is also at the center of some titillating Asheville lore, as Thomas Wolfe, one of Asheville’s most famous residents and a world-renowned writer, was rumored to go skinny-dipping in Beaver Lake under the cover of moonlight. Don’t get any ideas, though; there is a strict no-swimming policy at the lake nowadays! While Beaver Lake and its surrounding grounds are privately owned and maintained by residents of Lake View Park, it is open for public use, so both residents of the community and guests can enjoy it.

Beaver Lake
& Recreation

Truly idyllic, stepping into the Beaver Lake area is like vanishing into a postcard come to life. There is a flat, 2-mile trail encircling the lake that’s perfect for a brisk morning jog or meditative evening walk. Boating and catch-and-release fishing are popular pastimes as well, but do require permits to enjoy. There are also plenty of spots around the lake for picnicking and taking in the marvels of every season—whether it’s dogwood blooms in the springtime, brilliant red leaves in the fall, or scintillating ice formations in the winter.

Nestled alongside Beaver Lake is the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary, a 10-acre wetland managed by Blue Ridge Audubon. There are several overlooks and a boardwalk that allows visitors to observe the winged wonders and other wildlife in their habitats, and the sanctuary provides a checklist of all the bird species so you can keep track of the ones you spot. They even offer guided birdwalks on the first Saturday of every month, which is free and open to everyone. Whether you’re a novice birder or a self-proclaimed bird nerd, this is a special spot. The sanctuary is open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year (although it may occasionally be closed for maintenance). Given the delicate nature of our feathered friends, no dogs are allowed within the sanctuary.
