About Grace
The Grace neighborhood has roots tied to Grace Episcopal Church, a historic hub established as Beaverdam Mission in 1867.
The Grace community thrived in the 1930s with businesses that included Grace Supply Co. and Grace Pharmacy. Grace High School was also a key part of the community, and while it was torn down in 1960, it was rebuilt a few years later to be what is now Ira B. Jones Elementary School. While the Grace community eventually became woven into the wider fabric of Asheville's economic growth, these early businesses undeniably reflect Grace community's independent and entrepreneurial spirit, aligning with its current position so close to the retailers and restaurants that line Merrimon Avenue today.
