Grace Episcopal Church in Grace Neighborhood of Asheville

About Grace

The Grace neighborhood has roots tied to Grace Episcopal Church, a historic hub established as Beaverdam Mission in 1867.

The Grace community thrived in the 1930s with businesses that included Grace Supply Co. and Grace Pharmacy. Grace High School was also a key part of the community, and while it was torn down in 1960, it was rebuilt a few years later to be what is now Ira B. Jones Elementary School. While the Grace community eventually became woven into the wider fabric of Asheville's economic growth, these early businesses undeniably reflect Grace community's independent and entrepreneurial spirit, aligning with its current position so close to the retailers and restaurants that line Merrimon Avenue today.

Nearby Schools & Amenities

Nestled alongside the commercial corridor of Merrimon Ave, Grace neighborhood is perfectly positioned within minutes of such favorites as Cecilia’s Kitchen, Pho Real Vietnamese, Asheville Pizza & Brewing, Luella’s BBQ, The Original Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian, Green Sage Cafe, and Whit’s Frozen Custard. Not to mention, it’s a stone’s throw from area favorite PennyCup North, specializing in locally roasted, small-batch coffee beans.

In way of activities and recreation, Grace is within a short drive of Asheville Botanical Garden, Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary, Thomas Wolfe Memorial, and Grovewood Village—an enchanting arts and crafts destination with art galleries, a sculpture garden, and unique museums. The historic village is also adjacent to the Omni Grove Park Inn & Spa, where you can enjoy fine dining and favorite seasonal events like the National Gingerbread House Competition. In addition to these dazzling regional attractions, grocery shopping within the Grace neighborhood will also be a breeze, as it’s close to popular stores like Trader Joe’s, Fresh Market, Harris Teeter, and Whole Foods.

Jones Elementary School, Claxton Elementary School, Asheville Middle School, and Asheville High School. The latter was designed by the renowned Art Deco architect, Douglas D. Ellington, a familiar name to The Land of Sky. You might know him as the creator behind other iconic Asheville buildings like the S&W Cafeteria and Asheville City Hall or for his personal residence, the Douglas Ellington House, a historic home that functions as an event space. Grace neighborhood is also near the University of North Carolina Asheville (UNCA) campus, which hosts a variety of events, concerts, performances, markets, and more throughout the year.
