About Beaverdam
The Beaverdam Valley has a rich history that spans back to Native Americans who hunted along its once-rushing creek and among its forests of native chestnuts and tulip poplars. European settlers arrived in the 1780s, bringing industry and development, yet the valley’s pastoral charm remained and continues to endure today.
Among Beaverdam Valley’s notable residents was environmental writer Wilma Dykeman, whose nearby Homestead remains a historical landmark and now hosts contemporary writers through UNCA’s Writers-in-Residence program. Wilma wrote of Beaverdam Creek, “Nothing I look upon has been planted. All lives and thrives here by natural design.”
