About
Town Mountain

Interestingly, "Town Mountain" is not recognized as a distinct geographical mountain peak. Instead, Town Mountain is considered part of the mountain ridgeline rising above downtown Asheville, tucked between Sunset Mountain and Beaucatcher Mountain. Given the peaks’ proximity, it is sometimes referred to interchangeably with the other nearby mountains, and their history is closely intertwined.

Beaucatcher Mountain, whose name is attributed to resident James W. Patton teasing his sister-in-law about meeting her "beau” on the mountain, is connected with one of Asheville’s most haunted legends: Helen’s Bridge. Formally named Zealandia's Bridge, this well-known regional landmark is part of the Zealandia Mansion that was built atop Beaucatcher Mountain in 1889.

Sunset Mountain was previously the site of the Overlook Park Resort. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Asheville area was marketed as a top destination for wellness, a reputation that still lives on today. Wealthy visitors would seek out the restorative benefits bestowed upon Asheville’s clean, dry mountain air, luxury accommodations, and inspiring scenery.

Access to
Downtown

Despite its mountainous terrain, Town Mountain is actually quite close to downtown Asheville, with some residences a mere 2 minutes away. Town Mountain connects to College Street downtown, which is home to popular spots like Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen and Asheville’s iconic Friday Night Drum Circle in Pritchard Park (located at the intersection of Patton Ave and College St). Boasting easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway for scenic drives and hikes and quick access to Asheville’s electric downtown scene, Town Mountain truly feels away from it all yet around the corner (or down the mountain, as it were), to everything!

Roads and Weather Considerations

Town Mountain is known for its steep and winding roads characterized by hairpin turns and significant changes in altitude. Weather conditions can vary greatly between downtown Asheville and the higher elevations of Town Mountain, despite their proximity. Higher elevations are more likely to receive higher accumulations of snow and ice. In fact, the section of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Town Mountain Road, accessed at the Craven Gap Access Road, is part of a segment (mileposts 367.6-381.9) that frequently closes due to icy conditions during the winter months.

Steep mountain roads are best navigated with 4WD/AWD high-clearance vehicles, and it’s always a good rule of thumb to check road closures and conditions before venturing out. Even outside of winter, these higher elevations generally produce cooler temperatures on the whole throughout the year, so keep that in mind when traveling from your mountaintop property into town below!
