Haywood Road: A Block by Block Business Spotlight
West Asheville is a place where the area’s longstanding motto to “Keep Asheville Weird" is not just a bumper sticker but a business model and way of life. At the heart of it all, you’ll find Haywood Road—the high-energy thoroughfare where you’ll find some of the coolest and most creative shops in the city.
From vintage clothing to records to novelty finds, the Haywood Road District will be your go-to for unique items that will instantly add style and charm to your new West Asheville home or for picking out a gift your friends will never forget. In this iteration of our Ultimate Guide to West Asheville, we've created this block-by-block business spotlight below to guide you through the buzzing “Main Street” of quirky West Asheville so you can explore like a true local:

Vintage Clothing
West Asheville is stacked with vintage shopping options. Some of our favorite stores include rEvolve, where you can buy, sell, and trade pre-loved clothing along with vintage treasures and local art. Located in the same shopping center as Bottiwalla by Chai Pani, The Smokin’ Onion vegan restaurant, and Bad Manners Coffee, you can easily spend an afternoon eating, shopping, and sipping espresso while working on creative projects.
A few of our other favorite vintage clothing shops include the always colorful, unique, and funky Twice Round and Emote. The latter offers an incredible selection of original art, clothing, and accessories created by queer artists throughout the Asheville community, and it’s also a community hub for relief supplies and a free clothing section to help locals in need.
Fleetwood’s Vintage is a mult-purpose space—serving as a bar, vintage clothing store, concert venue, and wedding chapel (yes, you read that right). Bedecked in glitter, kitsch, and punk flair, this quintessential West Asheville spot allows you to find the faux cheetah fur jacket of your dreams and tie the knot with the love of your life, all while drinking your favorite cocktail or local beer. It doesn’t get more Asheville than that. Fleetwood’s also hosts a recurring Junk-O-Rama market, where vendors sell vintage clothing, records, art, and more. Its sister market, West AVL Street Market at Haywood Country Club, is a curated weekly outdoor pop-up with similar vintage items for sale, rotating food trucks, and a full bar.
Bonus: If vintage clothes aren’t quite your style, but you still prize sustainability, fashion, and whimsy, check out Clad. Offering high-quality, eclectic clothing pieces made to last, intentional beauty products, and artful home goods, you’re sure to discover new favorites. ).

Gifts + Home Goods
Speaking of thoughtfully chosen home goods, Haywood Road is home to a handful of unique home goods and gift shops. Whist is an independently-owned greeting card and gift shop with a cozy neighborhood feel and quirky collection of novelty items. Offering everything from jewelry to candles to art prints to puzzles to souvenirs, it’s our go-to for silly and sentimental gifts for every occasion. Be warned: you’ll go for a birthday gift for your best friend and leave with at least two more “gifits” for yourself. On this same block a few doors down, you’ll find Flora + Forage. Commonly referred to as one of the most Instagram-worthy spots in Asheville (and for good reason), this botanical-themed shop is a full-service flower shop, retail plant boutique, and a coffee shop/wine bar all in one. Teeming with plants and flowers, you’ll feel like you stumbled into a secret garden in the middle of the city. Another plant shop we love on Haywood Road is the appropriately-named Chlorophyll. Offering a collection of tropical houseplants, crystals, pottery, soils, seeds, gardening tools, and more, it’s basically heaven for those with a green thumb.
For the cannabis-inclined plant lovers, Garden Party is another Haywood Road staple. Not your average head shop, this dreamy, pastel, and checkered-patterned haven offers much more than edibles, smokables, and tinctures. You’ll also find candles, accessories, wellness and beauty, books, puzzles, and more. As the owners put it, Garden Party is really a celebration of “your sunny days, green escapes, and tiny rituals.”
For lovers of black cats and all things metaphysical, Haywood Road’s House of Black Cat Magic is a must-visit. Not only do they offer candles, incense, herbs, books, ritual items, and art, but they also help find veterinary care and homes for black cats, often maligned due to superstition. Their cat lounge even allows you the chance to bond with adoptable cats (and hopefully find your familiar), ready for their forever home.

Books, Records + Games
Established in 2004, Harvest Records is a cornerstone of Haywood Road, offering an unrivaled selection of vinyl records, CDs, cassettes, equipment, and more. A true mecca for music lovers, the shop pairs its extensive collection with a knowledgeable, friendly staff and a lively calendar of events, including in-store performances, listening parties, art debuts, and more throughout the year. Another media haven on Haywood Road? Orbit DVD.
This shop specializes in hidden gems and hard-to-find items like boutique Blu-ray labels, retro video games, strange sci-fi, import films, comics, collectibles & toys, and other curiosities. A favorite of oddballs and film aficionados everywhere, its building is a canvas for rotating murals that pay tribute to pop culture icons and cult classics. The current one depicts the beloved Twin Peaks’ creator, David Lynch, with a “damn fine cup of coffee.”
We also recommend Morgan’s Comics, the first woman-owned comic book store in WNC and a self-professed “Nerd Sanctuary.” Offering comics & graphic novels, vintage toys & action figures, local art prints & apparel, and board games & video games, there’s a reason it’s been voted Best of WNC for 8 consecutive years.
Bibliophiles will fall in love with Firestorm Books and Bagatelle Books. The former is an "anti-capitalist business" and queer, feminist collective featuring books and events that reflect the needs of marginalized communities in the South. Showcasing a unique blend of underground and independently published materials, Firestorm also hosts events, workshops, film screenings, fundraisers, and presentations to bring community members together. Bagatelle Books, next door to Flora + Forage, offers new, used, and rare books. They also stock every book (each priced at $8) in Character Study, a literary-themed cocktail bar down the street on Haywood Road. I mean, what pairs better with a page-turner than a literature-inspired cocktail?

If coffee and sweet treats are your thing, you’re in luck. Rowan Coffee’s second location in West Asheville is housed in a historic 1900s building, bathed in natural light and gorgeous details like multi-colored glass panels, hunter green tile, and nods to Greyhound dogs. The space truly is as beautiful as the coffee is delicious. Another favorite of ours is Odd’s Cafe, nestled beside Asheville Retrocade and Finest Deli. We especially love visiting during the warmer months when the garage windows are lifted, letting the breeze fill the space. You’ll also find a rotating collection of artwork from local makers available for purchase.
Ultra hip, BattleCat Coffee Bar is a coffee spot prized for its creative concoctions and collection of local art. It also shares a building with Tiger Bay Cafe, so you can enjoy a delicious bite with your caffeine buzz. Adjacent to Fleetwood’s, you’ll find Haywood Famous. Serving up Cuban coffee and evening hours, this coffee shop centers around an alcohol-free environment where patrons can revel in sober nightlife. In a similar vein, Plant Bar’s West Asheville location provides a community-minded hangout spot with ethically-sourced coffee, matcha, boba, herbal tea, zero-proof cocktails, and pastries. Their South Slope location transforms into a zero-proof nightlife destination, Nightshade.
For decadent desserts, head to Potential New Boyfriend, the name of which was inspired by the Dolly Parton classic. A hi-fi listening bar and dessert lounge, this Haywood Road gem serves up small plates, decadent sundaes with house-made ice cream, and an impressive wine selection. Ice cream lovers will also love The Hop’s West Asheville location. An Asheville institution, this local spot boasts bold, imaginative flavors (shoutout to Blueberry Kale and Sweet Beet), along with a wide variety of dairy, vegan, and gluten-free options.
For baked goods and sweets, stop by OWL (Old World Levain) Bakery or Hole Doughnuts. Hole is renowned for its simple menu of hot, made-to-order doughnuts and PennyCup coffee. They’ve even teamed up with The Hop for events like Ice Cream for Breakfast (yes, please)! Just look for the little blue truck parked beside their New Orleans–style shotgun house shop.
