Top 5 Things to Do in West Asheville
One of the biggest draws of the trendy and art-forward West Asheville neighborhood is its unbeatable walkability, and at the heart of the community is the 2.5-mile stretch of Haywood Road. This vibrant corridor is packed with bars and critically-acclaimed restaurants, art galleries, vintage boutiques, and locally owned businesses, typically just a short stroll from nearby homes.
West Asheville’s laid-back atmosphere makes it just as convenient to run errands as it is to spend the day leisurely hopping from shop to shop, and exploring everything the neighborhood has to offer can feel like an endless treasure hunt. In fact, you could easily fill an entire day (if not an entire week) checking out all the local favorites, but if you’re looking for some standouts, we’ve created a list of 5 things to do that perfectly capture the spirit of West Asheville within our Ultimate Guide to West Asheville:

Browse Harvest Records
In business for over 20 years, Harvest Records is an independent record shop and cultural hub in West Asheville with an extensive inventory of new and used vinyl, CDs, cassettes, stereo equipment, books, DVDs, and more. A true institution on Haywood Road, the shop’s wide variety of music selections and knowledgeable staff make it a mecca for music lovers.
While you can swing by anytime to grab the latest releases or find that rare vinyl you’ve been scouring the shelves for, they also host monthly art openings, an annual Record Store Day in August (aka a storewide anniversary sale), in-store performances and listening parties (reminiscent of tiny desk concerts), and plenty of other special events to help keep things exciting beyond everyday retail.
Harvest Records also created Transfigurations—a recurring music festival and community celebration to commemorate their major anniversaries —and its own boutique record label, which releases limited-edition pressings of beloved music. This inclusive and effortlessly cool spot perfectly embodies the creative energy and community spirit of West Asheville.

See Live Music at The Grey Eagle
The Grey Eagle Music Hall + Pub, a live music venue in the iconic River Arts District and nearby French Broad River region, is among the ranks of Orange Peel, Asheville Yards (previously Rabbit Rabbit), Salvage Station, Asheville Music Hall, and Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. Celebrated as Asheville’s longest-running all-ages live music venue, it’s prized for its intimate feel and high-quality sound and was named one of the “Ten Must-See Music Venues in the Southeast” by Garden and Gun magazine.
This tiny but mighty venue has hosted well over 10,000 artists over its 30+ years, with legendary acts like The Avett Brothers, Gregory Alan Isakov, Indigo De Souza, Band of Horses, Nathaniel Rateliff, Of Montreal, T-Model Ford, and many more. Its compact blue building, with vintage letter lights spelling its name and bold eagle mural in neon rainbow Lisa Frank–inspired colors, is instantly recognizable and instantly transports you back to the 90s when powerful atmospheric animal depictions ruled.
One of our favorite perks? The in-house Taqueria. You can easily grab a bite before or after the concert, and their menu uses fresh ingredients for traditional-style tacos and a selection of gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. Get a cold local brew on tap, or treat yourself to a house-made margarita—you’ll be hitting all the right notes for your taste buds and your ears!

Pizza + Arcade Games at Pizza Mind
Nothing kicks off the weekend like a family pizza night. At Pizza Mind, you’ll find the perfect family-friendly outing, with veggie-forward appetizers like fried green beans and buffalo cauliflower alongside classic favorites like wings and garlic sticks—because balance is everything! We also love their signature sandwiches, though the Ashephilly Cheesesteak with pimento cheese has our heart.
Our favorite pies include the Happy Wheel (a sesame seed crust with ground beef, onion, sharp cheddar, lettuce, pickle, and special sauce), Carolina BBQ (BBQ sauce, roasted pork or chicken, bacon, red onion, and sharp cheddar cheese), and Green (marinara, feta, artichoke hearts, broccoli, banana peppers, and spinach). They also offer plenty of veggie toppings and a small gluten-free pie, so everyone in the group can enjoy.
While waiting for your grub, learn your fortune with Zoltar (just avoid wishing to be “big”) and dodge the ghosts in Pac-Man in Pizza Mind’s minicade. For a Friday-night hang without the kiddos, we recommend checking out Retrocade. Located on Haywood Road in the same building as Odd’s Cafe, Retrocade operates on night-owl hours (open until 2 AM) and houses an impressive collection of vintage and arcade games along with cold beer on tap. It’s the perfect spot for nostalgia lovers and the kids at heart.
Taco Billy + Hole Doughnuts Breakfast

Allow us to introduce you to your new favorite breakfast ritual: tacos from Taco Billy and breakfast dessert (yes, this is a thing) from Hole. Located in a squat turquoise building with pops of orange on Haywood Road, Taco Billy serves up 6 breakfast and BYO tacos all day long (perfect for those who like to sleep in) and 11 lunch tacos starting at 11 AM.
Inside, the iconic orange goat paintbombing across Bob Ross–style landscapes greets you, instantly creating a warm, welcoming vibe. We recommend the Asheville-favorite, Migas breakfast taco (with eggs, onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, and crispy-fried tortilla strips, and cheddar-jack cheese) to be enjoyed on the patio with a crisp glass of Topo Chico. If you need a little snack while you wait, their cheese dip with Valentina hot sauce and a side of green salsa will hit the spot.
Ready for second breakfast, hobbit? Just a hop, skip, and a jump away, Hole Doughnuts is easy to spot thanks to its little blue truck parked beside a charming New Orleans–style shotgun house. Hole has three permanent flavors (Vanilla Glaze, Toasted Almond Sesame, and Cinnamon Sugar) along with a rotating weekly special. Past specials have ranged from Sumac Beignet to Rainbow Sprinkles to Beet & Goat Cheese. Pair your doughnut of choice with a steaming cup of PennyCup coffee, and you’ve officially reached breakfast bliss.
Drink Around the World at The Whale
Specializing in internationally-sourced beers and local brews, The Whale Craft Beer Collective boasts one of the best outdoor hangout spaces in the city and a striking centerpiece—a massive whale skeleton suspended above the taproom. Located in the heart of West Asheville, their goal is to help you land the “White Whale” of beers you’ve always wanted to try but have never gotten your hands on—all while sipping your way around the world from the comfort of your cozy Asheville bubble.
With such an extensive menu and dozens of beer styles to choose from, the bartenders are a great untapped (see what I did there) resource that can guide you through and help you track down old favorites and discover new ones. The Whale shares a building and outdoor patio with Haywood Common next door, so you can enjoy a quick bite or casual dinner while you imbibe. We love their Chicken + Waffles and House Burgers, but their Southern Plate and Bulgogi Bowl come in a close second.
The Whale also hosts tons of weekly and annual events like the beloved Pickle Fest, DumbAshe Trivia, Silent Book Club, Tiny Art Tuesdays, Grown-Up Scholastic Book Fair, Oktoberfest, and Crafts & Drafts, just to name a few. Pickle Fest brings together pickle-themed vendors—including Sweet Treats AVL serving pickle cotton candy and shaved ice—along with quirky games like Pickle on a String, the Gherkin Grab, and the Pickle Speed Eating Contest. You’ll also find festival favorites like face painting and live music throughout the day. Any day of the week, The Whale delivers great beer, good times, and a tight-knit community feel that keeps you coming back time and time again.
