A Saturday in the Valley: The 28805 Itinerary

Picture this: you just moved into your brand-new home in the 28805 zip code, and your weekends are wide open to enjoy old favorites and discover new ones. With its country charm and unbeatable accessibility, East Asheville has a way of turning even an ordinary Saturday into something extraTunnel Road East Ashevilleordinary, whether you’re catching up over a mug of PennyCup coffee with your bestie, chasing mountain views on the Blue Ridge Parkway, getting in touch with your wild side at the WNC Nature Center, or spending a date night out complete with fine French wine and cuisine that’s divine at RendezVous.

To help you maximize your weekend “me time” and fill your calendar with fun events and memorable hangs, we’ve outlined the ultimate “Saturday in the Valley” itinerary, designed to showcase the best of the East side while leaving some room for spontaneity. Think of this guide as inspiration (with choose-your-own-adventures built in) so that you can tailor the day to your mood: For a complete overview of East Asheville, be sure to check out our Ultimate Guide to Living in East Asheville.

Get Your Caffeine Fix at a Local Coffee Shop

To start your day on the right foot, dip into one of East Asheville’s treasured coffee shops like Daymoon Coffeebar, PennyCup Coffee, Dripolator East, or BattleCat Coffee East (their Vietnamese Iced Coffee is next level, trust us) before savoring a classic breakfast or laid-back brunch (for those who would rather sleep in) at The Local Joint or Cornerstone. The latter offers a seemingly endless range of breakfast options, including Southern-Style Benedicts, BYO Breakfast Bowl, and our personal favorite—Blackberry Stuffed French Toast. Just a heads up, you won’t want to share this one.

Daymoon Coffeebar is nestled in the quiet community of Fairview and offers specialty coffees and teas along with scrumptious baked goods and smoothies. They also have a small collection of books and local art for sale, along with a beautiful outdoor patio so you can soak up the sun while sipping and skimming. While there, head next door to Signs for Hope to shop with a purpose. This shop sells unique gifts from around the world, with 100% of the proceeds supporting families adopting Deaf children and families raising Deaf children.

WNC Nature Center

Explore the Wild + Wonderful (CYOA: Answer the Call of the Wild at the WNC Nature Center or Uncover Natural Marvels at the Asheville Museum of Science)

Frequently cited as one of the top family-friendly things to do in Asheville, the WNC Nature Center has been a staple of the Asheville community for over 100 years. Home to native wildlife, the Nature Center offers a packed calendar of hands-on encounters, including Holiday Critter Check-Ups, Junior Wild Walks, Wolf Howls, and Brews & Bears. The latter one is geared toward the adults, who can sip craft beer while watching black bears Uno and Ursa enjoy popsicle enrichment. It’s one of the cutest things in existence!

For more family fun, check out AMOS (Asheville Museum of Science). This local science museum offers interactive, hands-on exhibits for science lovers of all ages, delving into everything from paleontology to climate change to hydrology. The kiddos will especially love the immersive Forest Ecology playground and STEAM Discovery Cart with up-close specimens (available on Saturdays and Sundays). We love AMOS’s experimental learning approach because it brings big scientific concepts to life, making them easy to understand and also just a blast to try!

Drive Along the Blue Ridge Parkway (CYOA: Stop For a Convenient Hike or Shop at the Folk Art Center)

Craggy Gardens

While simply driving along the parkway is an activity in and of itself, there are also plenty of stops you can make along the way to make the journey that much better. Offering postcard-worthy views in every season, spring and fall stand out with their gorgeous blooms and vibrant color-changing foliage framing long-range views of the towering Blue Ridge Mountains.

If you’re interested in seeing the Blue Ridge Parkway from a different perspective, we recommend the Craven Gap hike. Situated on a popular section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail on MP 377.4, this moderate hike is less than 15 minutes from downtown Asheville and family-friendly. Running parallel to the BRP, you’ll catch views of the Parkway and vehicles below through the forest. If you don’t mind traveling a bit further north (under 20 miles from downtown Asheville), we also love Craggy Gardens Trail—an easy to moderate 1.9-mile round-trip hike that offers showstopping views of blooming rhododendrons and nearby summits.

Along MP 382 of the BRP, you’ll find the Folk Art Center—headquarters of the celebrated Southern Highland Craft Guild. Operating for nearly 100 years, the SHCG supports well over 800 working Appalachian artists. The Folk Art Center features three galleries, a craft shop, a bookstore, and a library, all of which are perfect for an intentional afternoon of buying handmade items and getting inspired for your own creative pursuits. Pro tip: If visiting from March through December, you’ll catch free craft demonstrations in the lobby and get the chance to chat one-on-one with artists!. The Center also hosts an annual Craft Conference in September and Holiday Markets in December.

Filo & Post70

Luckily, Craven Gap and the Folk Art Center are under 5 miles from each other on the BRP, so you could carve out time for both if you’re feeling adventurous and artsy.

Set Up for an Evening of Sand Volleyball + Sunset Views at Highland Brewing

Nestled on over 40 acres, Highland Brewing was Asheville’s first craft brewery (post-Prohibition), cementing it as a legend in the Land of Sky. Home to multiple spaces that regularly host live performances and art markets, along with its expansive Meadow boasting a “Crafted for Kids” natural playground, an 18-hole disc golf course, and professional sand volleyball courts, this giant of the craft beer industry is truly a one-stop shop for entertainment.

For the perfect hangout with friends, spend the afternoon digging into some friendly sand volleyball competition before grabbing dinner at one of several on-site food trucks. On select nights, their Rooftop Bar hosts pop-up events, where you can clink and cheers to old friends and new experiences against a sunset backdrop. Highland Brewing is always upping the ante, and this year is no exception. In 2026, plans include an on-site pizza restaurant, along with the addition of Black Dome Outfitters and Cultivate Climbing—bringing even more excitement to its patrons. This "South Slope of the East" will quickly become your weekend go-to as an East Asheville resident!

Indulge in Dinner + Dessert

Highland Brewing

While East Asheville offers delicious diner-style spots, pub grub, and food trucks, it’s also home to some finer dining for all of your date night needs. Our favorite places include Filo + Post70 and  Rendezvous. The former is a European-style bakery by day and a craft cocktail bar and bistro by night. After some savory plates like Pulled Pork Croquet or Lahmacun Turkish Flatbread, get a couple of their desserts to split, like the Flourless Mocha Torte, Lemon Chiffon, or New York-Style Cheesecake paired with a glass of wine or espresso.

In the Haw Creek neighborhood, you’ll find the beloved French bistro, RendezVous—the sister establishment to the renowned and retired Bouchon. Serving up authentic French cuisine (the Boeuf Bourguignon will always reign supreme in our mind) and a delectable selection of wine, the space also contains eight pétanque courts for a boules sport similar to bocce. As a reward for your play, indulge in the Crème Brûlée Classique or Profiteroles, a choux pastry roll filled with crème pâtissier, whipped cream, and chocolate ganache drizzle. You can thank us later!
