Oakley Asheville Real Estate & Homes for Sale
About
Oakley
Charm, character, and community spirit converge in Oakley, one of the central neighborhoods of East Asheville. Tucked between historic Biltmore Village and the Blue Ridge Parkway, Oakley is known for its craftsman-style bungalows, walkability, and community-oriented feel. In fact, this tight-knit area has a long history of showing kindness to neighbors and strangers alike, offering mutual aid during the Great Depression and rallying to join the front lines and provide uniforms during WWII, which were developed at the old Sayles Bleachery (located where Oakley’s Walmart Supercenter stands today).
That strong sense of community spirit is bolstered today by the neighborhood’s notable gathering spots that include the Oakley Library and garden, where events like movie screenings and cooking demos are hosted throughout the year, along with a seasonal farm stand where you can pick produce, flowers, and pumpkins. Here, neighbors genuinely look out for one another, and local connection is simply part of everyday life.

Homes &
Neighborhood Streets
When we say Oakley is a tightly knit community, we mean it literally. This pedestrian-friendly community evolved from farmland to a working-class suburb in the early 20th century due to its ties to the aforementioned Sayles Bleachery and corresponding Village. Most of the homes in this neighborhood are relatively close to each other and are situated on smaller lots, promising more manageable yard work and local walkability.
The Oakley neighborhood is bordered by Sweeten Creek Road, Thompson Street, and I-240, with Fairview Road as the primary thoroughfare. It is also located 5 minutes from the Beverly Hills community and the Asheville Municipal Golf Course. Oakley is characterized by mature trees and narrow, walkable sidewalks that connect to local amenities like the neighborhood library and Biltmore Village’s shops and restaurants via Fairview Road. The architecture is a blend of classic 1920s bungalows, brick ranch, eclectic new builds, townhomes and condos, and single-family Arts & Crafts. Oakley is a neighborhood where timeless small-town values blend with thoughtful progress and inclusive growth, making it a place you’ll be proud to call home!
Shopping &
Access
Oakley is within 4 miles of Asheville’s vibrant downtown and close to the shops and restaurants near Fairview Road and Tunnel Road. The River Hills Shopping Center is within a 5-minute drive of the community and is home to large retailers, including Target, Michaels, and Dollar Tree. Also along Tunnel Road, you’ll find the Asheville Mall, Lowe’s, Whole Foods, Rooms To Go, and a variety of chain restaurants and retail stores. The Sayles Village area in Oakley is home to big-box stores such as Walmart Supercenter, Kohl’s, and PetSmart.
Oakley is also connected to Biltmore Village via Fairview Road, a historic village nestled just outside of the world-renowned Biltmore Estate. Built by George Vanderbilt, this refined shopping district showcases historic English-style architecture and offers a mix of upscale shops, regional art galleries, and award-winning restaurants. Some local favorites in and around Biltmore Village include The Corner Kitchen, Hillman Beer, The Cantina, and Burial Beer Co. Forestry Camp. Boasting local businesses and national brands, Biltmore Village will have everything you’re looking for.
Oakley is also within 3 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway Charlotte Highway access point, close to the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center—a great starting point to map out your outdoor adventures! With easy access to shops, restaurants, schools, and more, life in Oakley strikes a harmonious balance between community connection and everyday convenience!

Schools
While Oakley falls within Asheville’s city limits, it lies outside the Asheville City Schools district and is served primarily by Buncombe County Schools. The neighborhood itself is home to Oakley Elementary School, whose original building dates back to 1922, making it the oldest Buncombe County School. Oakley Elementary offers a Dual Language Immersion Program in which students learn in both English and Spanish, cultivating bilingualism, biliteracy, and cultural awareness.
The school also offers an AIG (Academically or Intellectually Gifted) program and a holistic curriculum that includes music, art, PE, and STEM. Oakley is within Buncombe County’s Reynolds District, so students typically progress to A.C. Reynolds Middle School and A.C. Reynolds High School.
