Asheville, as well as the rest of Western North Carolina, is a leaf peeper's dream in Fall! You will find breathtaking, foliage-rich views within just miles of Downtown Asheville, or trek a little farther up the Blue Ridge Parkway to enjoy the most breathtaking of views. Asheville was even voted the #1 Foliage Destination by TripAdvisor in 2010. Typically the best foliage is seen from Mid October to November, but there is no designated "peak week". If you are interested in seeing exactly where the best foliage is, we recommend checking out Explore Asheville's Color Map and Fall Leave Schedule.
Fall is certainly amongst one of the most fun-filled seasons in the Ashville area. In addition to the scenery changing beautiful colors, there are also plenty of fun festivities in and around the city of Asheville. Below are just a handful of some of our favorite fall festivals in the area.
You won't want to miss the N.C Mountain State Fair in the middle of September not far from the Asheville Regional Airport. This 10-day event is fun for the whole family, celebrating the fun, food, agriculture, and local tradition of Appalachia.
Asheville is well known as "The City of Beer", what better way to celebrate than attending the annual Oktoberfest in Pack Square Park in October. Celebrate German culture with plenty of beer as well as Bavarian food, music, games, and other traditions.
Best Fall Hikes
One of the best ways to see the stunning foliage is to get out and explore in it! Below are 3 hikes ranging from about a mile to 10 miles that will be sure to get you into the amazing views opposed to just looking at it.
Rough Ridge is a 1.2-mile, moderate hike off of the Blue Ridge Parkway that is ideal for early autumn. Explore Grandfather Mountain's middle elevations and hike through beautiful mountain flora and craggy rock outcrops. The Rough Ridge Trail offers gorgeous views of the landscape, covered in vibrant foliage.
Graveyard Fields trail is another moderate hike great for early fall. Graveyard Fields is a 3.3-mile hike known for its picturesque waterfalls. While beautiful in the summer, Graveyard Fields truly shines in the fall with the stunning waterfalls framed in stunning autumn colors.
While Shinning Rock Mountain is a more difficult and longer hike at 10 miles, it's certainly worth the effort. This hike follows one of Western North Carolina's most scenic trails - Art Loeb Trail. If you're an avid hiker you won't want to miss the exception views of the autumn foliage at the quartz-crusted summit of Shining Rock mountain.
