The delightfully historic Kenilworth neighborhood is located to the southeast of downtown Asheville. Established in 1913, many of Kenilworth's historic homes were built in the 1920s and is resonant of Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial, and Craftsman style architecture. The community is situated between Beaucatcher Mountain and the Swannanoa River in addition to being bordered by Tunnel Road and Biltmore Avenue. Kenilworth's sidewalk and tree-lined streets are very walkable and the neighborhood is managed by the Kenilworth Residents Association which hosts workdays, community programs, and neighborhood social events. The Kenilworth Conservation Collective and Kenilworth Artists Association are also very active in the community. The Kenilworth Artists Association Open Studio Tour is a longstanding event in the Kenilworth neighborhood and features over 20 artists across 14+ home studios. Many of these groups converge upon the Harvest House Community Center which includes features such as a dance studio, clay studio, weaving studio, woodworking shop, billiards, and shuffleboard.
In addition to the proximity to downtown Asheville's restaurants, dining and shops, Kenilworth also connects to historic Biltmore Village and the entrance to the Biltmore Estate. It is said that developer Jake Chiles built the winding roads of Kenilworth wherever the horses trekked which is why the neighborhood has the feel of a village rather than a planned community. Kenilworth features over 900 homes today.

The original Kenilworth Inn was built in 1890 by Joseph Gazzam, a senator from Pennsylvania. The Inn was luxurious and operated until 1909 when it burned to the ground. It was rebuilt by the James Chiles in the Tudor Revival style. Throughout the years it has been utilized as a military hospital, a mental hospital, a hotel, and currently an apartment complex. Originally, Kenilworth was marketed by its founders as an immaculate suburban retreat that was located near Asheville. Kenilworth Lake, created in 1925, added to the development's appeal.
While many home's interiors have been modernized, the majority of homes in the Kenilworth neighborhood feature styles from the 1920s to the 1950s, when the majority of the homes in the neighborhood were built. Median home prices for Kenilworth real estate tends to exceed $550,000, a statement to the desirability of this historic community.

Greenways
Kenilworth Park, the primary park and greenspace inside of the neighborhood, features a basketball court, a child's playground, courts for tennis and pickleball, seasonally available restrooms, and an open field for multi-purpose use. In addition to Kenilworth Park, Seven Springs Park, Meadow Park, and Forest Park are also located in the neighborhood and frequented by neighborhood walkers.
Nearby greenway systems include the Swannanoa River Greenway which is a 7.5 mile stretch of greenway that runs from the River Arts District at Lyman Street & Amboy Road to Azalea Road. Eventually the Swannanoa River Greenway will connect East Asheville to Biltmore Village, the River Arts District and West Asheville and offer an option for recreation ranging from walking, running, biking, along with being accessible for wheelchair access.

Access to Downtown
& Biltmore
For residents of Kenilworth, easy accessibility to downtown Asheville is a major part of the appeal. While most will likely choose to drive from Kenilworth to downtown Asheville, the neighborhood is uniquely positioned to be walkable north from the community to neighboring Biltmore Ave which eventually connects to central Asheville. Mission Hospital is directly accessible from Biltmore Avenue in addition to being located near Biltmore Village and the River Arts District. Kenilworth is connected to downtown Asheville both by physical location and in terms of its artistic heartbeat and deep commitment to historic conservation.
